The Service

Deadbolt Installation, Done Right

A spring-latch knob lock alone can be defeated with a credit card and confidence. A deadbolt — a solid steel bolt thrown a full inch into a reinforced frame — is what actually makes a door resist being forced. It's the highest-value security upgrade in residential locksmithing, and the install quality matters as much as the hardware: a premium deadbolt in a misaligned strike with half-inch screws performs like a cheap one.

Forge Locksmith installs deadbolts across Houston, TX on doors of every kind — fresh installations on doors that never had one, replacements for worn or builder-grade bolts, keyed-alike setups matching your existing keys, and double-cylinder or keypad models where they make sense.

When You Need Deadbolt Installation

  • An exterior door has only a knob lock and no deadbolt
  • Your current deadbolt is builder-grade, worn, or misaligned
  • You want every entry door secured to the same standard
  • After a break-in or attempted entry on your street
  • A garage side door, gate, or workshop needs real security
  • You want a single-key setup across new and existing deadbolts

How It Works

Simple, transparent, and the same every time — no surprises at any step.

  1. Door evaluation

We check the door material, existing prep, and frame condition, and recommend the right grade and style of deadbolt for the location.

  2. Precise boring (for fresh installs)

On doors without an existing deadbolt, we bore the cross bore and edge bore with professional jigs for a factory-quality fit.

  3. Install with a reinforced strike

We install the deadbolt and upgrade the strike plate with 3-inch screws that anchor into the wall stud — the cheap detail that multiplies kick-in resistance.

  4. Full-throw verification

We confirm the bolt throws completely into the frame without lifting or forcing the door — the test most DIY installs fail.

Deadbolt Installation FAQs

What's the difference between Grade 1, 2, and 3 deadbolts?

ANSI/BHMA grades measure durability and force resistance. Grade 3 is basic builder hardware, Grade 2 is solid residential, and Grade 1 is the strongest, rated for commercial use. We typically recommend Grade 2 minimum for Houston homes, Grade 1 for primary entries and businesses.

Should I get a single- or double-cylinder deadbolt?

Single-cylinder (thumb-turn inside) is right for most doors and is what fire safety favors — you can always exit quickly. Double-cylinder (key both sides) makes sense only for doors with glass within arm's reach of the lock, and you must keep a key accessible inside for emergencies.

Can you add a deadbolt to a door with glass panels?

Yes. Depending on the glass placement we'll recommend a double-cylinder deadbolt or a relocated/captive-key solution, and discuss the fire-safety tradeoffs honestly so you can choose what fits your household.

How long does deadbolt installation take?

Replacing an existing deadbolt takes about 20–30 minutes. A fresh installation on an undrilled door, including boring and a reinforced strike, typically runs about an hour per door.
